Sinn Féin spokesperson on the Environment, Brian Stanley TD, said that a huge number of people remain opposed to water charges despite the Government having been forced into a major climb down by introducing lower flat rate payments.

Deputy Stanley said: "These charges represent a bridge too far after years of austerity that have drastically cut the incomes of a huge amount of Irish households.
"I would urge the Government to listen to what the voice of the people is telling them, and to introduce an amendment to the Water Services Bill, which they were afraid to debate today in the Dáil, to abolish the domestic charges."
