The Eco Schools Programme is run by the Foundation for Environmental Education in more than 50 countries throughout the world.
Commenting on the accolade, Kathleen Lynch TD, Minister of State with responsibility for Primary and Social Care, said: "I want to congratulate Cork University Hospital on becoming the first teaching hospital in the world to achieve a Green-Campus Award.

"This is a strong achievement and I'm especially pleased that the partnership between the hospital and University College Cork was a factor. Since UCC is the academic partner of the South/South West Hospital Group, which includes CUH, this award also bodes well for the future of the Hospital Group.
"Cork University Hospital is the largest teaching hospital in the country. There are over 40 medical and surgical specialities on the campus and this prestigious award will further enhance its growing reputation as a world class educational hospital."
The Green-Campus Programme encourages a partnership approach to environmental education, management and action in third level institutions. CUH has been working on the Green-Campus Programme since the summer of 2010 and the award recognises the commitment displayed by the teaching hospital to enhance on-campus sustainability and environmental awareness.
