South Dublin County Council (SDCC) is being urged to bring forward plans for a new housing development on council-owned lands between the New Nangor Road and Corkagh Park, adjacent to Old Church and Kilcarberry.
Sinn Féin Clondalkin Councillor Eoin Ó Broin said the housing and homeless crisis has never been worse.
He said: "There are 4,500 families on the Council waiting list for the Clondalkin and Lucan areas. There are families presenting as homeless every single week. The situation is completely out of control.
"The most effective solution to this crisis is to build more council houses. While local authorities have been starved of funds by the current and previous Government there are signs that this may change.
"South Dublin County Council must be ready to take advantage of any new funding stream that becomes available from central government.
"At present we only have planning permission for up to 260 new houses ready to go with a commitment to increase to 500 units by mid 2015. This is simply not enough.
"The Council has to be more ambitious. Small infill housing developments will never meet the needs of our community.
"South Dublin County Council owns a significant piece of land between the New Nangor Road and Corkagh Park adjacent to Old Church and Kilcarberry estates. A significant portion of this 66 acres must be developed to meet the housing needs of local people.
"I have tabled a motion for this week's Clondalkin Area Committee proposing that the Council housing section bring forward plans to secure a Part 8 planning permission for a new council estate on a portion of this land."
