Eirgrid Project Raises Concerns

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Michael Moynihan TD, has called on Minister Pat Rabbitte to immediately publish any evidence he may have about the possible health effects of high voltage cables in overhead pylons.

Deputy Moynihan was speaking after weekend reports revealed that the Minister for Health, James Reilly, wrote a letter to cabinet colleagues raising concerns about the possible adverse health effects of the pylons.

Mr Moynihan said: "If the Minister for Health saw it fit to write a letter to cabinet colleagues outlining his concern about the safety of high voltage cables, then it raises some very serious questions about the entire Eirgrid project.

"We are hearing accusation and counter accusation about the safety of having these cables constructed close to residential areas. If the health of children is put at any risk by having overhead pylons in close proximity to their homes then the Grid 25 project cannot continue in its current state.

"I am calling on Minister Pat Rabbitte to make an immediate and clear statement revealing if he has any evidence which supports Minister Reilly's concerns. We cannot place the health of our children under any threat and we need to know definitively whether the proposed power lines are in any way dangerous.

"In our submission to Eirgrid on their Grid 25 project, Fianna Fáil called for an independent international assessment to be commissioned to ascertain whether there are potential health risks associated with the construction of these power lines."
