Irish Govt Urged To Provide More Funding For Narrow Water Bridge Project

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Séamus Kirk, has called on all stakeholders involved in the construction of the proposed Narrow Water Bridge to finally put their money where their mouth is.

Deputy Kirk raised the frustrating delay on progress during a special Dáil debate on the project.

"Action is needed urgently to get this long awaited project off the ground," said Deputy Kirk.

"The Narrow Water Bridge has been a long running saga for the people of Louth and south Down. However, we are now entering a critical phase and it’s time for all stakeholders to put their money where their mouth is.

"The political will from both sides of the border is there to move ahead with construction of the Narrow Water Bridge, planning has been approved and now all that is left is the funding.

"I am calling on the Irish Government to immediately reverse its decision not to work with the Northern Executive to provide additional funding for the project.

"There is funding promised from the EU and the Northern Executive. Louth County Council and the Government maintain that the delay in providing funding is down to the budget running over budget.

"The funding deficit must be tackled and it is vital that the Irish government takes the lead in addressing the issue by meeting with the councils involved and creating a new source of funding to progress this project.

"The development of the bridge will greatly assist in the growth of tourism, economic regeneration and social relationships in the respective areas."
