Talented engineers Ross Thompson and Leonidas Proximo who study Electrical and Electronic Engineering at South Eastern Regional College have recently been selected to represent Northern Ireland at the Electronic Engineering UK WorldSkills Finals.
Top Electronic Engineering students will battle it out for their chance to be considered for a place on the 2015 UK WorldSkills team which will take place in Brazil; a competition designed to test their practical and theoretical skills to the limit.
The talented duo will now travel to The Skills Show at Birmingham NEC in November as the search for the top construction apprentices continues.
Commenting on being selected, Lisburn lad Ross Thompson aged 19 said: "I'm delighted to have been selected. I’m quite nervous but I am looking forward to the experience. I would like to thank my tutors for motivating me to reach my full potential and hopefully I can make them proud in the finals."
Earlier this year both Ross and Leonidas took part in a two-day-long Inter-Campus Skills competition. The event was one of a series of Inter-Campus College competitions taking place throughout the province designed to challenge the ability of apprentices to follow detailed instructions, test skills within tight timeframes, and produce neat and accurate work – all essential requirements for today's construction environment.
The duo thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are hopeful the competition can act as a springboard for success in their careers.
Kieran McKenna, Head of School for Manufacturing and Electrical Engineering commented: "I would like to congratulate the students. Being invited to a national competition is something to be proud of and I hope they cherish this achievement for a longtime. They are a credit to the College, their family and their employer and I have no doubt that they will continue to develop their skills within the industry and will have a very successful career."
