East Belfast DUP MLA and Policing Board member Robin Newton has welcomed the latest operation against fuel-laundering gangs in Co Antrim, but said that action is necessary to not just disrupt these operations but to put those responsible behind bars.
Robin Newton MLA
Mr Newton said: "There have been a number of successful operations to disrupt fuel-laundering gangs in Northern Ireland and I particularly welcome the fact that three arrests followed the latest operation in County Antrim.
"However, all too often the equipment is seized but no arrests are made, and if people are apprehended then no prosecutions take place. This is simply unacceptable and it is vital that prosecutions are brought forward and that anyone convicted receives a severe sentence for these crimes.
"The Lord Chief Justice has established a working group to review sentencing guidelines and the DUP asked for fuel crime to be included within that review. We will continue to press for action to ensure that sentences handed down reflect the seriousness of these crimes. All those involved in the criminal justice system however must ensure that a priority is placed on catching these criminals and bringing them to justice.
"This latest raid has resulted in 2.5 tonnes of toxic waste and 4,000 litres of red diesel being seized. No doubt the toxic waste would have been dumped by the gang resulting damage to the countryside and a danger to the public. It is insufficient for the PSNI & HMRC to raid the premises and disrupt the criminals; it is necessary to collect the evidence put the criminals behind bars for a long time."
