Outpatients Dept At Letterkenny Hospital To Be Refurbished

Letterkenny General Hospital has announced the refurbishment of the former Emergency Department, Medical 1 and Medical 2 areas.

The refurbishment will provide an additional Out Patient Treatment Area and space for the relocation of Pharmacy services.

The approved capital budget for this project is €1.24m. The works will commence shortly and will include some demolitions, internal reconfigurations, increased energy performance, new electrical installations and alterations to the mechanical services. The total area for refurbishment of the 1960s-built area will result in a space of 1,000m2. The project will also include new fixtures and fittings throughout to upgrade the area to 21st century standards.

The project has gone to tender and it is hoped that the successful contractor can be appointed by the end of July or early August. The construction period is likely to be four to six months.

The new facilities will provide more modern fit for purpose treatment spaces for the Outpatient Department and will provide adequate registration and waiting areas for patients and their families, the spaces provided will predominately be for Orthopaedic and Ante-Natal/Gynaecology Services, however, there may be capacity for other services to utilise the space also.

There will also be space freed up in the existing Out Patient Department which will be used to provide additional clinics for other services.

The Design Team, led by Adam Leadley Architects have consulted widely within the Hospital and are transforming the aged building into a modern bright energy efficient space to enhance the experience of the service users and allow more throughput thus reducing waiting times for some out patient appointments.
