In order to reflect the falling cost of the technology in recent years, the consultation proposes changes to the level of support for large scale solar photovoltaic generating stations as well as changes to support and sustainability criteria of biomass. This includes a requirement for wood fuel to come from sustainably managed forests, and a proposal to set a clear pathway to reduce the carbon intensity of biomass generation.

Commenting on the consultation Arlene Foster said: "The Northern Ireland Renewables Obligation has proved very successful in increasing the amount of electricity generated from renewable sources. However, it is important that we review the Northern Ireland Renewables Obligation on a regular basis to reflect changes in technology costs while delivering value for money for consumers.
"This consultation proposes changes to large scale solar PV and biomass-related issues which are important renewable technologies as we move towards a more low-carbon energy mix."
