Environment Minister Alex Attwood has recognised the role of volunteers in bringing the iconic Grey Point Fort back to life.
The Fort, in Crawfordsburn is thought to be the best preserved 20th century coastal battery in the British Isles. Built between 1904 and 1907, it was integral to defending Belfast from sea and air attacks during both World Wars.
Military enthusiasts and volunteers have been integral in preserving the Fort. In order to continue this work and help promote its development as a visitor attraction, the Friends of Grey Point Fort Group has been formed.
The Minister had the opportunity to meet with Councillor Marion Smith, Deputy Mayor of North Down Borough Council and other members of the Friends Group during his tour of this historic coastal defence.
During his visit, the Minister was presented with an advance copy of a new guide to Grey Point Fort and got some hands on experience with the Morse code telegraphic kit and other unique radio equipment used during the Second World War. He also visited the rejuvenated 'dig-for-Victory' garden.
Commenting on his visit Minister Attwood said: "This really is a unique experience and I welcome the work of the Friends Group to raise the profile of the Fort as a major tourist attraction in North Down.
"I am most impressed with how they are engaging not only with my department, through the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) to enhance and raise awareness of this remarkable structure, but also their outreach with the local community.
"I particularly welcome the engagement with students of South Eastern Regional College who will be developing their skills in work projects such as painting the railings at the site as part of their student training schemes. This not only enhances and helps preserve our built heritage but embeds a desire to cherish and protect our environment in the local community."
