Lagan Brick Workers Attend Labour Court Hearing

Lagan Brick workers, and their SIPTU representatives, attended the Labour Court on Wednesday morning, 18th July, for a full hearing of the issues involved in the long running dispute at the Lagan Brick manufacturing plant, Kingscourt, Co. Cavan.

The dispute, which is in its eighth month, was referred to the Labour Court by SIPTU under Section 20 (1) of the Industrial Relations Act (1990) following the refusal by the company’s management to jointly refer the matter.


SIPTU Organiser, John Regan, said: "SIPTU and the Lagan Brick workers were pleased to get the opportunity to fully appraise the Labour Court of the issues involved in this dispute from a workers’ prespective.

"The workers were disappointed that the management of Lagan Brick failed to attend the hearing. However, the workers accept that they will be bound to adhere to the terms of the Labour Court recommendation which emerges, even though the company will not be under a similar obligation."

He added: "The Lagan Brick dispute has been running for 217 days. When the Labour Court issues it’s recommendation there will be for the first time an evaluation, by an independent body, of the monetary value which is at the centre of the dispute."
