Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has congratulated Roads Service and its contractors for the successful completion of the record number of road resurfacing schemes in 2011/2012 which accounted for £9.8million on expenditure in Fermanagh.
Speaking ahead of this evening's meeting between Roads Service and Fermanagh District Council, the Minister said: "Last year’s budget for structural maintenance and local transport and safety measures allowed a good range of such schemes to be successfully delivered by Roads Service.
“Roads Service’s budgets for road maintenance and improvement schemes are greatly reduced this year, in line with the four year budget agreed by the Executive. However, Roads Service is using its available resources effectively and continuing to deliver quality public services.
“Construction work on the new A32 Cherrymount Link Road is on target for completion before the end of this financial year. And I can confirm the continuation of design work on the identification of a preferred route for the Enniskillen Southern Bypass.
“Roads Service’s programme for the year ahead includes a right turning lane on the A4 Belfast Road at Station Road, Brookeborough, traffic calming at Drumbeg and Drumbawn, Enniskillen and the provision of Puffin crossings at the Brook, Enniskillen and Main Street, Maguiresbridge."
Speaking at the meeting, Divisional Roads Manager Pat Doherty welcomed last year’s record expenditure on structural maintenance which allowed Roads Service to deliver many much needed projects. Over 49.6 kilometres of resurfacing was completed in the Council area including the Wellington Road, Dublin Road and sections of the Irvinestown Road at Enniskillen.
Road improvement schemes delivered last year included the completion of traffic signals at Tempo Road / Wickham Link, construction of a footway at Brollagh Road, Garrison, a safer routes to schools project at Erne Integrated College, Enniskillen, provision of a Puffin Crossing at Main Street, Derrylin, a collision remedial scheme on the A509 Derrylin Road north of the Gransha Road junction, a park and share/ride scheme at Lisbellaw and the refurbishment of Maguiresbridge Footbridge.
