Omagh-based company, Waste Systems Ltd, has picked up the prestigious all-island accolade for Best Green Tech Innovation at the final of the third annual Irish Times InterTradeIreland Innovation Awards, in Dublin.
In recognition of their award, the local firm will receive a communications and advertising package from the Irish Times worth €10,000.
Waste Systems Ltd has developed and designed a unique separation process with the potential to revolutionise the recycling industry worldwide. The technology makes it possible to achieve 100 per cent recovery of a waste stream previously considered unmanageable and uneconomic to recycle.
The company was established in 2010 by County Tyrone man Nishi Ward, who realised the opportunities in the waste recycling market globally and the lack of technology available to solve existing problems in that industry. He successfully set-out to tackle those problems and has ambitious expansion plans for the company, aiming to be world leader in the separation of waste and problem materials over the next five years.
Liam Nellis, Chief Executive of InterTradeIreland and Chair of the Innovation Awards final judging panel, said: "These awards are designed to recognise the best innovations in businesses across the island of Ireland and Waste Systems Ltd is a prime example of this pioneering excellence. Northern Ireland companies are definitely leading the way in green-tech innovation with a local organisation winning this category for the second year running. I would like to congratulate Waste Systems Ltd, which has a great future ahead. With the expected growth in the recycling industry on a global scale, this locally developed technology has the potential to transform this industry, not only on the island of Ireland but worldwide."
