Construction Work On €35m Education facility Gets Going

Construction work has commenced on a new a campus for Monaghan VEC at the former Army Barrack’s site in County Monaghan.

The site on the Armagh Road in Knockaconny will see the demolition of all existing buildings onsite including the perimeter wall.

Meanwhile the change of use from army barracks to educational use will include the construction of new split level 16 classroom Primary School and a new three storey 400 student post primary school.

In addition a three storey, part four -storey building will be built to accommodate 700 students who will move on to further education.

The €35m project will also include a two level sports hall, a theatre building and a new internal road with set-down area for buses.

Two ESB substations, ancillary storerooms, electrical rooms, new boundary walls, car parking for 291 spaces, ball courts, landscaping and associated site works will all be tackled during the development.

When complete the new buildings will require a relocated entrance and new roundabout at the junction of the entrance to the IDA Business Park on the Armagh Road (N12).

It is understood that part of the site for the project is to be reserved for the construction of an additional national school at a later date.

A full design team has been engaged. Main contractor John Sisk is expected to be on site for 18 months.
