£4.5m Housing Project For North Belfast

It has been revealed that a new housing development, at a former NI Housing Executive site, will provide housing for those in urgent need.

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has outlined plans for the £4.5m worth of new housing at Somervale in North Belfast.

According to the DUP Minister, Oaklee Homes Group will provide new modern energy efficient housing in a site just off the Ballygomartin Road.

A design team has just been appointed and is currently working up proposals to provide 25 new family homes and 15 bungalows suitable for older people and those with mobility problems.

Building work is estimated to start in spring 2012, with a construction period of around 18 months. The Minister confirmed that £4.5 million has already been set aside to fund construction work.

Minister McCausland said: "This announcement is a welcome step forward in bringing much needed family and bungalow units to this area.

"There have been lengthy delays in delivering this project but I am glad that things will now start to happen on the ground.

"Oaklee Homes Group has just appointed a design team and plans are currently being worked up.

"These will be subject to consultation with the local community, before submission of a detailed planning application. I would encourage all to get involved and make their views known, so that we can move forward quickly," he said.
