McGuinness Opens Garden Of Remembrance

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP, MLA has formally opened a Garden of Remembrance for past residents of the House in the Wells in Derry.

‘The House’ provides structured support services and accommodation for 25 homeless men over the age of 18 with a history of drug and alcohol abuse. It is part funded by the NI Housing Executive under the ‘Supporting People’ programme.

The deputy First Minister praised the work of the Officer in Charge, Andy Bonner, and the staff at the House in the Wells. He said: “The House in the Wells has been providing shelter and support for almost forty years and Andy Bonner and his colleagues are to be commended for the help and care they provide to those in need.

“As we reflect today on those who have previously benefited from the care and support provided here, some of whom sadly are no longer with us, we can be encouraged by the stories of those who have been helped to turn their lives around. I hope the residents will find that this garden, and the excellent help and services provided here, will be a real encouragement to them.”

The deputy First Minister spent time talking with residents and their families about the support services available and the difference that ‘The House’ had made to their lives.

Mr McGuinness said: “One cannot put a value on the service provided here and in other such facilities.

“It is reassuring for the individuals themselves and those who are close to them to know that they can have a safe and secure shelter. ‘The House’ has been a lifeline to many people in this city over the years and I have no doubt that it will continue to provide an invaluable service in the years ahead.”

The current property was built in 1982 and extensively refurbished in 2008. The NI Housing Executive funds the facility through its Supporting People programme, the annual contract value being £332,995.
