A Dáil Minister has been cleaning up in Galway with news of approval for two new sewerage schemes.
Part of a €133m raft of schemes included for water and sewerage contracts to start in Galway in 2010 - 2012, the announcement by Phil Hogan, Minister for Environment, Community & Local Government confirmed that he has given Galway County Council approval to invite tenders for the Wastewater Treatment Plant and Collection Network contracts for the Clifden Sewerage Scheme.
He also gave the Council approval to invite tenders for the collection network for the Milltown and Claregalway Sewerage Scheme.
Minister Hogan said: "The Department of Environment is committed to enhancing the water and sewerage framework which will provide economic growth and facilitate new development while preserving environmental and water quality services in Galway.
"In the ten year period from 2000 to 2009, My Department has invested some €353m in Galway water and sewerage infrastructure."
"I am pleased to announce today that I am giving the green light for the €7m Clifden Sewerage Scheme.
"In addition I have given the go-ahead for the €2.87m collection network for the Milltown and Claregalway Sewerage Scheme.
"This is part of the €133m included for water and sewerage contracts to start in Galway under my Department's Water Services Investment Programme 2010 – 2012.
"This will greatly improve the quality and scale of the wastewater infrastructure in the county and provide the capacity to support economic growth in Galway," he said.
"The financial support from my Department reflects the commitment to continuing investment in our wastewater schemes to ensure that discharges into our rivers, lakes and coastal waters meets the highest international standards and enhance the quality of the bathing water in the Galway area."
The Minister highlighted other Galway projects, which have been included under the Department of Environment's Water Services Investment Programme 2010-2012.
These are Galway City Water Rehabilitation (€10 million); Costello Water Supply Scheme (€15.3 milllion); Kinvara Sewerage Scheme (€4.8 million); Athenry Sewerage Scheme (€11.6 million) and the Oughterard Sewerage Scheme (€5.8 million).
