Over €100,000 of funding under the OPW's Minor Flood Mitigation Works Scheme to Galway County Council for flood relief works to be carried out at various locations in Ballinasloe and Mountbellew has been announced.
Brian Hayes, Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW).
Minister Hayes said: "I am pleased to announce today that funding of €100,350 is to be allocated to locations in Ballinasloe and Mountbellew in County Galway.
"The works to be carried out consist of the replacement of existing culverts with culverts of larger capacity and the regrading of existing open drains.
"The locations where these works will take place in Ballinasloe are as follows: Ballinderry and Ballyglass in Kilconnell; Liscune Upper and Garrymore in Ballymacward and Tonacurra in Newbridge.
"Works in Mounbellew have been approved at Bovinion and Cloonreleagh West. The amounts allocated to these locations vary between €9,000 and €19,800.
"The provision of funding for minor flood mitigation works complements a range of other ongoing OPW programmes, including carrying out major flood relief schemes, and flood studies, that are aimed at managing national flood risk in a proactive and comprehensive way into the future," the Minister stated.
The Minister concluded: "The OPW has now allocated €255,600 to different flood mitigation schemes, both coastal and non-coastal, in County Galway this year and a total of nearly €3.7m to the county since the scheme was introduced in August 2009."
