The GAA's incoming President is to officially open a new school sport's facility, Heywood Sport, this weekend, May 14th.
Liam O'Neill, president elect of an Cumann Luthchleas Gael will cut the ribbon at the official ceremony at 2 pm.
Kilkenny hurler, Tommy Walsh and Laois footballer Michael John Tierney will also be present at the event in Heywood Community School, Ballinakill, Co Laois.
Builders and architects worked hard at Heywood Sport which provides both the school and the South Leinster region with a high-standard indoor and outdoor sporting facility.
Home to South Leinster's first, 84m x 140m floodlit synthetic pitch; the complex is now ready for booking by sports clubs and organisations nationwide.
Heywood Sport aims to assist the development and training of sporting teams by providing high-standard facilities in a central location.
Primary school Gaelic football, hurling and camogie tournaments will kick-start the event at 12 noon. Participating primary schools include: Knock; Raheen; Timahoe; Abbeyleix; Ballyragget; Shanahoe; Lisdowney; Ballinakill; Swan. The primary schools will go head to head and compete to be crowned the first Heywood Sport Champions 2011.
Heywood's own Junior All-Ireland Camogie Champions 2011 will be present on the day to lend support to the young players.
Phil Bowe, Chairperson of the Heywood Sport Committee and MC on the day said: "The official opening will be a great day out for the family while highlighting the importance of sport in the community of South County Laois and North Kilkenny."
Heywood Sport is a €750,000 development scheme that commenced in 2007.
The complex's current facilities consist of a full sized floodlit GAA synthetic pitch and a large sports hall suitable for basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer and indoor circuit training.
In addition, the school has provision for large scale catering facilities adjacent to the complex. Changing rooms, meeting rooms, a fitness gym, ball wall and a hard core training area also facilitate the complex. Further plans are currently in place to equip the changing rooms with ice baths, a sauna and a steam room.
The National Lottery, the Central Council and Leinster Council of An Cumann Luthchleas Gael together with personal donations from parents, past pupils and the Religious Trustees of Heywood Community College; The Salesian and Brigidine Orders.
