€1.6m For New Waterford City Library

More than €1.6 million is to be provided for a new library at Carrickphierish in Waterford City, according to local Fianna Fáil TD Brendan Kenneally.

The funding will allow the library to proceed along with two new schools.

The new library is to be linked up with the two new 16 classroom schools for Waterford Educate Together and Gaelscoil na nDeise. The initiative is part of a joint approach by the Department of Education and Science, the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government and Waterford City Council. In total €1.685 million is to be provided for the new library.

"This is good news to get in the run up to Christmas as it will allow the library and the two new schools to proceed," said Deputy Kenneally. "Both Waterford Educate Together and Gaelscoil na nDeise are currently operating out of temporary prefab buildings. This is not enough for the schools, their staff or students.

"While the Department of Education had already given the go ahead for the two schools to proceed putting their new buildings in place, these projects could not proceed until funding was provided for the new library. Now that the funding has been announced we should see these projects start to move in the new year.

"As well as linking up with the two new schools, the new library will be part of the wider community facilities in the area. It will make an important contribution to the local people and the local community and it will be a great resource for the people of Waterford City."
