Historic Stonework Praised At Belfast Library

Specialised stonework restoration on an iconic Belfast city centre building has been singled out for high level praise.

Libraries NI initiated the repair works to correct weather damage to Belfast Central Library's stonework and roof.

The Stormont Arts Minister, Nelson McCausland - whose responsibilities include libraries - visited the Royal Avenue building to view the important stonework repairs being carried out to the façade of the historic building.

The work on the landmark grade B listed building is expected to be completed by the end of this year, with the DUP Minister commenting: "The Northern Ireland Executive has committed nearly £850,000 to these restoration works in recognition of the significant role that Belfast Central Library plays in the cultural life of Northern Ireland.

"This work will ensure the safety of the public and also ensure that this iconic building is preserved for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations.

"The library is also a key part of the regeneration of the historic North West quadrant of the city."

Libraries NI Chief Executive, Irene Knox said: "The restoration work at Belfast Central Library will support the library's pivotal role as a hub for culture, learning, heritage and information in the life of the city.

"The building's facelift will maintain the historic integrity of the building, reinforcing the library's important past whilst providing a welcoming environment for both customers and tourists," she explained.

The Minister was accompanied on his tour of the building by Billy Martin, Chairperson of H&J Martin, the building firm that originally constructed the library, and a descendant of the original Martin family.

Also in attendance was David Patton, Chairperson of the Patton Group, who are carrying out the repairs.
