HSENI In Chimney Warning

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) and the NI Association of Chimney Sweeps have issued a warning on the dangers arising from solid-fuel heating appliances not being properly cleaned.

"When properly used, heating appliances which burn coal, wood or peat are safe," said Jim King of the HSENI.

"However, the appliance and its chimney must be properly cleaned at least once a year, or more often if the manufacturer recommends it.


"If this is not done, appliances and their chimneys can become blocked with soot and other residues, resulting in lethal quantities of carbon monoxide being produced in a property."

David Campbell, Chairman of the NI Association of Chimney Sweeps, added: "After having a chimney swept, preferably using a trained and registered technician carrying the correct equipment and conforming to BS6461, you should be vigilant for a few days to ensure no loose soot drops into the flue ways or baffles of the appliance.

"Members of the NI Association of chimney sweeps have the tools and the experience to ensure your appliance is properly cleaned and left in a safe condition, however settlement of deposits after brush sweeping can still occur."
