Green Economy's 'Huge Potential'

Ireland's Environment Minister has said the 'green economy' presents "huge potential" for the country.

John Gormley said investment in the sector can help tackle national economic and environmental challenges.

Speaking at the Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards ceremony, the Minister said he was "delighted to see so many short-listed projects that promote environmental initiatives and contribute to a better and cleaner environment".

The main award winners were South Dublin County Council, who was named Local Authority of the Year 2009, and Youghal Town Council who was named the Town Council of the Year.

In relation to the economy, Minister Gormley said that "renewal of the economy is going to be driven by recovery in the business sector".

The Minister spoke of the initiatives he had taken to improve the economic situation, such as bringing forward the new Planning Bill, aimed at streamlining the planning system.

He has also urged local authorities to exercise restraint in setting commercial rates and local charges for next year.

"The government’s Framework for Sustainable Economic Renewal emphasises the green enterprise sector and the creation of green jobs," said Mr Gormley.

"A high level action group on green enterprise established earlier in the year has been working with our state agencies to ensure Ireland is in a strong position to maximise the potential for Ireland's green economy," he added.
