18th Century Heritage Discussed

Dublin's urban heritage will be in focus today as a special conservation event takes place.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Emer Costello, launched the 'Learning from Henrietta' conservation seminar this morning.

The seminar's main focus is on encouraging discussion on the repair and use of eighteenth century urban houses.

A spokesperson said it will also look at the lessons that can be learned from the recently completed first phase of stabilisation works to Nos 3 and 14 Henrietta Street in the city.

Other topics to be discussed on the day include ideas for the design competition for the infill of 16 Henrietta Street, fabric repair, and the implementation of the Henrietta Street Conservation Plan.

The seminar is die to finish with a panel discussion featuring, among others, city architect Ali Grehan and city planner Dick Gleeson.

Many of those taking part in the panel discussion have been involved in conserving Henrietta Street – one of the finest intact Georgian Streets in Europe.

The Lord Mayor commented: "I am delighted to launch this seminar on the subject of conservation of eighteenth century buildings with a focus on Henrietta Street in particular.

"Dublin has many examples of these fine buildings and it is vitally important that their future is safeguarded for generations to come.

"I commend Dublin City Council for their ongoing conservation work particularly in conserving the eighteenth century streetscape of Henrietta Street."
