Plan For Magilligan Jail Moves Ahead

A project to build a replacement for an ageing Co Londonderry prison facility has moved a step further.

Just months after designers were appointed for a new 800-bed facility at Magilligan Prison, the NI Prison Service (NIPS) has made its final external appointment to the growing Magilligan Project Team.

NIPS has now announced the engagement of leading consultancy firm KPMG as Business Case Advisers.

KPMG will now assist the Team in the development of what has been described as a 'robust business case', which will evidence the funding required for the gaol.

NIPS said that KPMG were selected after a rigorous procurement process that required evidence of previous business case development, financial modelling and their understanding of benefits realisation, whole life value for money and integrated team working practices.

Prison Service Director Robin Masefield welcomed the appointment: "This is an important milestone in the Magilligan re-development project with the finalisation of the project team.

"KPMG are a well renowned company with a proven track record and I am delighted that they will be part of what will be a highly exciting venture.

"I have no doubt that their contribution will be pivotal to helping NIPS deliver on its core principles of offender management, safer custody and public protection, which will in turn assist us in the wider aim of reducing recidivism," he said.

"They will also work with staff and other stakeholders to develop a business case that will demonstrate a suitable financial and economic solution with the central plank of reducing recidivism rates at its core."
