Derry Flats To Be Demolished

Construction News Image
Thirty seven flats in Derry, which were built more than 30 years ago, have been earmarked for demolition, as part of a regeneration scheme in the area.

The flattening of the site is the first phase of a Housing Executive project aimed at improving living standards in the residential area.

Area Manager Sean Mackie said: "We are delighted that all the residents from Glen Court and Cedar Court have been found alternative accommodation and that work is now underway on the first phase of this regeneration scheme.

"The regeneration of the flats at Glen Court and Cedar Court underscores our ongoing commitment to improving housing conditions within the city and is part of our ten year Derry/Londonderry Housing Strategy."

Mr Mackie said he recognised that the flats had become unpopular in recent years due to a number of design deficiencies, which in turn led to increasing levels of vandalism and anti social behaviour in and around the flats.

The Housing Executive carried out consultation with residents and their elected representatives and a number of options were looked at through an economic appraisal process.

Mr Mackie said the demolition of the flats is the preferred option and considered "good value for money".

"We are entering into further consultation with residents in the area, elected representatives and other statutory agencies about the nature and scale of what will replace the flats. This process will be ongoing," he added.

Castlederg Building contractor, Lowry Brothers, has been appointed to carry out the demolition work.
