Dromara £2.6m Treatment Facility 'Progressing Well'

A £2.6m upgrade to the Dromara Wastewater Treatment Works is progressing well, NI Water has said.

When finished the new facility will have the capacity to cater for a forecasted population up to 2030 while meeting the latest Northern Ireland Environment Agency discharge consents and the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directives.

Eric Stewart, Project Manager said: "The upgrade will undoubtedly benefit residents and businesses in the surrounding area by providing a more efficient service."

Mr Stewart said, as with any construction work, there will be a level of disruption, which his team will aim to keep to a minimum.


Construction work got underway last November, and it is anticipated the scheme will be complete in November 2009.

The contractor Biwater Graham has warned that there may be increased traffic in the area as workers will access the site from the main Hillsborough Road.

"NI Water and its contractors will ensure that all delivery vehicle drivers associated with the construction will be advised of the residential nature of the access route, and advised to take extra care when traveling through the area," said a NI Water spokesman.

Ronnie Crawford, Mayor of Lisburn, said: "Enhancing the wastewater infrastructure in Dromara and the surrounding area will also facilitate future development by ensuring the system has the capacity to cope with new housing or business operations.

"We are delighted that when complete, this project will provide residents and businesses with an improved service that reflects 21st century technology," added the mayor.
