Councillor's Concerns Over €100m Killarney Viewing Platform

The decision to construct a massive €100m viewing platform in Killarney, Co Kerry, has been called into question by a local councillor, who believes the picturesque area may be 'selling itself short'.

Michael Courtney said there are fears the 271 foot structure could turn the town into a 'one-stop' attraction, prohibiting tourists from exploring the area further.

Councillor Courtney, who along with others has voiced adverse opinions on the aesthetics of the development, said there is a danger Killarney could lose its 'charm and innocence'.


However, only four objections were lodged against plans, which have since been approved by the council.

Despite this, Mr Courtney has insisted 'word-on-the-street' is that more people are disgruntled with the proposals.

"Speaking to Killarney people, I'd say many were opposed to this. Personally, I'm afraid it will shorten the tourists' stay, they'll take one look at the town and then go away. If you go up, you've seen everything," the councillor said.

Mr Courtney likened the ethos of the scheme to that of Blackpool Tower in England.

"Blackpool is a hurdy gurdy seaside place but it's my opinion people will treat this like the Blackpool Tower. To me this isn't Killarney," he added.

The viewing platform - expected to created much-needed building jobs - is being developed BL Beara.
