Mine Workers Accept Management Proposals

Workers at Tara Mines in County Meath decided their fate today, after 60% of those balloted voted in favour of cost-cutting measures at the facility.

Union members accepted proposals that could see a number of changes to operations at the mines.

SIPTU and the facility's management negotiated the deal following initial proposals to cut jobs and freeze salaries.


Tara Mines management had called for a reduction in costs to secure the facilities future, in a response to the dramatic fall in global zinc prices.

It is believed the proposals provide eight redundancy packages, which will be made available at the end of this year, and a further eight at the end of 2010.

Some 670 workers were put on protective notice earlier this month.
