Job Fears At Tara Mines

Trade union officials are expected to hold talks in Meath later today aimed at saving jobs at Tara Mines.

Fears have grown that jobs losses could be incurred at the facility, prompting SIPTU members to take action.

A meeting is due to be held in Navan later, after around 370 workers were placed on protective notice at the mines yesterday.


According to reports, the firm has suffered from the fall in global zinc prices and the weakening US dollar.

It is believed management at the mines expect union members to agree on new cost-cutting measures within the next two weeks.

Bosses have put forward plans to postpone pay increases, cut working hours, halt bonuses and stop further recruitment as part of a survival plan.

Union members have called for a different approach, suggesting management have failed to enter into meaningful discussions.

It is feared the 700-strong workforce could be cut if issues are not resolved.
