£3.8m Derry Sewage Station Complete

Work has finished on a new £3.8m sewage pumping facility at Derry city's Victoria Market, Northern Ireland Water has confirmed.

Part of an overall £21.6m upgrade programme on the city's existing sewerage network, NI Water said the new facility will benefit residents and businesses.

Director of Engineering Procurement Trevor Haslett said: "We are delighted that the new underground pumping station is complete and that the car park is now available to the public in time for the busy Christmas season.


"Overall, this scheme will maximise the capacity of the sewerage infrastructure in the area," he added.

Derry Mayor Gerard Diver lauded the work of the multi-agency group behind the project, which began in August 2007.

"The work consisted of two separate phases - construction of the pumping station and laying of two large diameter storm pipes. Close liaison was required with all our stakeholders to ensure contractors could complete the work in a safe environment," said the Mayor.

"The patience of the general public, businesses and residents has allowed the contractor to focus on the task at hand and subsequently the project was completed ahead of schedule," he added.
