The man at the helm of the Northern Ireland Health and Safety Executive has been recognised for his achievements at a glittering awards bash in London.

HSENI Chairman, Professor Peter McKie, was presented with the IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health)/Sypol Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in helping boost health and safety performance not only in Northern Ireland, but across the UK.

Professor McKie said: "I am very honoured if a little flabbergasted to have received this award. Throughout my career I have always advocated the need for clear leadership from the top on safety issues.

"All my efforts have been focused on getting business leaders to realise that legally, morally and for plain good business reasons, they have to lead on safety processes.

"Having spent nearly 40 years working for Du Pont it is not unsurprising that you develop a passion for health and safety. It just seems so obvious that to be a good business leader your major responsibility is the welfare of those people who work for you."

President of IOSH, Ray Hurst, said: "The judges were unanimous in their decision to make this prestigious award to Professor McKie.

"He cares passionately about health and safety leadership and has achieved standards of excellence in a range of business endeavours.

"His commitment to occupational health and safety remains steadfast. It is particularly pleasing to see a leader from the business community recognised in such a way," he added.
