Taxpayer's money will now build more houses than before, as a result of Northern Ireland's Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie's new housing procurement strategy.
As part of her New Housing Agenda she asked Housing Associations to work together, rather than individually, when procuring services to build more social and affordable homes for rent. In effect taxpayers, through economies of scale, will now get 'more bang for their buck'.
The Minister made the fresh announcement at the ten year anniversary of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) in Northern Ireland.
In pledging her support for the work of the CIH, Margaret Ritchie said: "My new procurement strategy makes sense. Housing Associations working together will have much more clout in buying the services required to build new homes than if they were working individually.
"Remember, this is taxpayers money, and I am determined that any money coming out of my coffers is spent as effectively as possible. I look forward, especially in the present housing climate, of seeing the procurement strategy in action."
CIH President Steve Benson said: "The continued development of strong partnerships in Northern Ireland is very important to maximise the planned significant investment in housing.
"CIH Northern Ireland is committed to working towards this common goal of more social and affordable housing, better standards and excellent delivery of services.
"As CIH President, I am pleased to say that interest in the housing profession in Northern Ireland has never been stronger. More people are pursuing housing as a career. Membership of CIH is growing strongly.
"Combined with our experience gained over the passed decade, CIH Northern Ireland is in a strong position to help lead and support the sector through the challenges and opportunities ahead."
