Minister To Open New Tesco Store In Kilrush

The official opening of Ireland's newest Tesco store in Kilrush tomorrow will herald the beginning of a new chapter for the economy of West Clare, according to Minister of State Tony Killeen.

The Clare T.D. said the development would bring an estimated €2.5m into the local economy on wages earned by its 100 employees, as well as source much of its supplies in the West Clare area.

"This is a great boost for Kilrush's economy and the future of the town," said Minister Killeen.

"Kilrush is the primary business town for the West Clare Peninsula and serves over 10,000 people. The continuing surge in visitor numbers to the town has led to an increase in commercial developments, which have, in turn, added to the visitor experience. I would hope that the presence of the new Tesco would encourage new businesses to develop in the town."

The Minister said that the new store is ideally placed to act as a service point for the entire West Clare area and will further establish the town as a hub of commercial activity and it is developments like this, as well as the decentralisation of Revenue to Kilrush, that play a pivotal role in developing the West Clare peninsula.

He said that the new development would complement the town's existing commercial centres.

"Moore Street, Frances Street, Market Square, Henry Street and other shopping centres are populated by businesses that have been family run for generations. I have no doubt that the new Tesco store will add to the shopping experience in Kilrush and, in turn, help to serve the needs of the people of west Clare and beyond," the Minister concluded.
