New Public Transport Bridge Over Liffey Agreed

A new Luas and public transport bridge across the river Liffey, from Marlborough Street to Hawkins Street, has been given the go-ahead by Dublin City Council.

Councillors have approved a revised plan, which includes the development of the new link from Eden Quay to Burgh Quay.

The plans provide for the construction of a footbridge at the site to facilitate pedestrians, as well as two bus lanes, two cycle lanes and a Luas line - even though the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) has yet to determine the route of the proposed Luas line.


It is likely that the bridge will facilitate the new Luas BX line, which will connect the Red and Green Luas lines across the city centre. The RPA has previously identified this as the preferred option.

The Council is set to go ahead with the construction of the bridge even if not assigned as a Luas route, as it would serve to offload traffic congestion when works commence on O'Connell Bridge.
