SSE Airtricity has today announced the launch of its €5 million all-island Community Fund, a significant initiative designed to empower local communities across Ireland to drive sustainable change.
The fund aims to support community-led projects that contribute to the transition to a net zero future. By providing financial assistance to both urban and rural initiatives, SSE Airtricity seeks to foster local leadership and promote social equity.
The fund's focus areas include environmental education, sustainability, and climate action. It is expected to fund a wide range of projects, from renewable energy installations to community gardens and biodiversity initiatives.
Following a successful consultation phase, which garnered over 600 submissions, SSE Airtricity is well-positioned to allocate funding to projects that will have the most significant impact on local communities.
This initiative reflects SSE Airtricity's commitment to its customers and the communities it serves, demonstrating a strong dedication to a sustainable future.
Speaking at the launch of the SSE Airtricity Generation Green Community Fund, Jack Chambers T.D., Minister for Finance said: "We all have a responsibility in delivering Ireland's sustainable future and social impact funds like SSE Airtricity's €5m Generation Green Community Fund will make a real difference in supporting communities and organisations in their local endeavours.
"I would encourage all local communities and organisations to apply for financial assistance to support your sustainability efforts, and I really look forward to seeing the projects made possible due to the SSE Airtricity Generation Green Community Fund."
Klair Neenan, Managing Director of SSE Airtricity, echoed Minister Chambers' sentiments: "I'm delighted that the SSE Airtricity Generation Green Community Fund is now open for application. Getting to Net Zero is in everyone's interest and local communities will be at the heart of the energy transition. Through the consultation phase, we received substantial levels of valuable feedback from innovative and vibrant community initiatives across the island, and SSE Airtricity wants to lend our support to these groups by powering up their sustainability plans.
"We know that issues like education, biodiversity and infrastructure are big priorities for our local communities, and we understand the hurdles often faced with resourcing and funding. That's why we're delighted to invite applications for the fund, and I would really encourage schools, non-profits, and local community organisations who are focused on sustainability, to apply for financial support and let us assist your efforts."
