MDE Completes Electrical Work At Avish Pumping Station

Construction News Image
MDE Installations has successfully completed the electrical installations at NI Water's newly constructed Avish Water Pumping Station. This project, part of a £3.5 million investment, is designed to strengthen the water supply infrastructure for the Northwest region of Northern Ireland.

Located within the Carmoney Water Treatment Works, the Avish Pumping Station enhances operational resilience and flexibility, particularly for the Northern and Western Water Zones. MDE Installations' expertise in electrical engineering was crucial to the successful completion of this important project.

MDE's Role in Avish Pumping Station

MDE Installations, a specialist electrical contractor, played a key role in the project. They were responsible for the installation of distribution boards, containment systems, and advanced safety systems, including intruder alarms and fire alarms. MDE also conducted comprehensive electrical testing and commissioning to ensure the new systems meet the highest standards of safety and efficiency.

In addition to electrical work, MDE contributed to the installation of crucial Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control, Automation, and Telemetry (MEICAT) systems, which are vital for the station's automated operations and real-time monitoring. The installation of a surge vessel and compressor by MDE ensures the station can handle pressure fluctuations effectively, while power supply amendments were completed in coordination with Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE).

Integrating with Broader Water Infrastructure

The Avish Water Pumping Station is a vital component of the Carmoney to Strabane Strategic Trunk Main, which includes a 28km pipeline connecting critical infrastructure in the region. The new station serves as a hub, improving water flow and providing greater operational flexibility to mitigate supply interruptions during high-demand periods or emergencies.

Tzvetelina Bogoina, NI Water's Director of Infrastructure Delivery, highlighted the importance of this milestone: "This major pumping station will play a crucial role in securing a reliable water supply for the Carmoney area and the wider Northwest. The upgraded infrastructure will reduce supply interruptions, especially during the winter months, while improving water quality across the region."

Future-Proofing Northern Ireland's Water Supply

MDE's involvement extended to the decommissioning of old systems and carrying out pipeline modifications, such as the installation of Non-Return Valves (NRVs), to ensure smooth integration with existing infrastructure. These updates are expected to deliver long-term benefits to NI Water's customers, enhancing the reliability and efficiency of the region's water supply network.

As a leading contractor in electrical installations, MDE's contribution to this project underscores their commitment to supporting critical infrastructure across Northern Ireland.
