Construction News Image
Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Kieran O'Donnell TD, and Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee TD, have announced that the work at Clonmel Garda Station has gone to tender.

The project involves constructing a new Garda Community Engagement Headquarters for the Tipperary South Area in Clonmel. The completed headquarters will overlook a new public plaza, which is part of the proposed Kickham Barrack masterplan.

The detailed design and all associated tender documentation for the new station are now complete. The tender will be issued, with construction expected to begin on-site in Q4 2024.

The development consists of the following:

• A new 3,630 sqm Garda Community Engagement Headquarters for the Tipperary South Area building on a site of circa. 0.46 Hectares

• Two, three and four storey building with a separate single-storey ancillary building to the rear

• The accommodation of the main building includes offices, conference facilities, staff support facilities, custody areas, plant and associated ancillary spaces

In a statement Minister O'Donnell said: "I am delighted that the project is progressing and is now at tendering stage. The construction of a new Garda Community Engagement Headquarters for the Tipperary South Area in Clonmel consists of a two, three and four storey building that will face onto a new public plaza. The purpose built Garda Station will provide modern accommodation and facilities that will assist members of An Garda Síochána in the delivery of their important work.

"This project is one of many significant capital projects that the OPW, An Garda Síochána and the Department of Justice are collaborating on. It is an example of Governments commitment to delivering fit for purpose work environments that have the space to grow and increase capacity to meet future demands. The project will be delivered by the OPW team, whose contribution is paramount to the delivery of projects like this.

"Once completed, I have no doubt that this new state-of-the-art Garda Community Engagement Headquarters for the Tipperary South Area building will enhance Garda presence in the town while facilitating the policing infrastructure capacity for Clonmel and the surrounding areas."

Minister McEntee stated: "The construction of a Garda Community Engagement Headquarters for the Tipperary South Area in Clonmel will be a great boost not just for the town of Clonmel but also the surrounding communities in South Tipperary and beyond. This project is an important part of our efforts to create stronger, safer communities.

"It is very important that a busy town such as Clonmel has a Garda Station that is fully equipped to handle all of the challenges that every similar-sized community faces. This station will enhance the service that Gardaí are able to provide to residents and ensure that they are fully equipped to tackle crime in the area. It will also be a great economic and architectural asset to Clonmel as it will be designed to the highest standards and be integrated into a public plaza in the town."

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said: "The Development of this new Garda Station in Clonmel is a very important element of the Garda Capital Investment Programme, and will enable our personnel to continue to deliver policing services in the town of Clonmel and the wider environs of South Tipperary. We look forward to continuing to keep people safe from a modern fit for purpose building."

The new Garda Station and ancillary works is designed to a high architectural and urban design quality, incorporating OPW's sustainability policy and provides universal access throughout. This new building will provide contemporary Garda Síochána facilities and will have the flexibility to accommodate future operational changes. When complete, the new Garda facility will integrate with the proposed landscaped public plaza and wider masterplan to reinforce this civic space while supplying vital Garda infrastructure for town policing.
