In partnership with Donegal County Council, Uisce Éireann has announced the completion of a €7 million state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant in Burtonport.
The village will benefit from essential infrastructure provided by Uisce Éireann, enhancing the local community, environment and supporting economic development for decades to come.
Uisce Éireann has continued to prioritise the elimination of raw sewage from the coast of Donegal and this year has seen another significant leap forward with the completion of a new wastewater treatment plant in Burtonport, improving the lives of locals and visitors alike.
Speaking about the significant investment, Patrick Greene, Wastewater Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: "We are proud to have delivered this important project for the local community in Burtonport. This upgraded infrastructure has eliminated the discharge of raw sewage into Rutland Sound and will improve water quality in bathing waters in the area."
Patrick added: "I would like to thank all our stakeholders including local residents, elected representatives, and the media for their support while we worked to complete this crucial project for the people of Burtonport. The area is renowned for its water-based activities such as swimming, fishing to name a few, and its tourism sector. This significant investment will boost the area by enhancing the local environment, protecting health and improve water quality on the bathing waters. It will also ensure that the wastewater infrastructure has capacity to meet future development needs in the area."
The successful completion of this essential infrastructure ensures that Burtonport meets both national and EU regulatory standards for urban wastewater treatment. This development is part of a broader initiative across Ireland, with 34 towns and villages now enjoying cleaner waters and improved amenities thanks to the construction of new treatment plants where none existed before. Following recent projects in Kilcar and Kerrykeel, County Donegal, completed late last year, Burtonport benefits from similar enhancements. The delivery of these works was managed by Veolia on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
