Maynooth in County Kildare has been crowned the cleanest town in Ireland by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) in their 2023 survey.
The town was recognised for attaining a level of cleanliness in 2023 that surveyors have not encountered in two decades.
Maynooth University campus was described as 'spotless', with the main street achieving an 'excellent result for a busy shopping environment'.
2023 marks the 21st anniversary of the IBAL litter league. Cathaoirleach of the Clane/Maynooth MD, Cllr Tim Durkan accepted the Dr Tom Cavanagh Memorial Trophy in Courthouse Square, Maynooth.
Cllr Tim Durkan said: "It's a wonderful start to 2024 for Maynooth, to achieve such fantastic results. To be acknowledged for achieving standards that have never been seen in the 21-year history of the IBAL survey is a great honour. This award is a great acknowledgement of the work of Maynooth Tidy Towns volunteers, the local retail community, Maynooth University, Kildare County Council and many others."
Naas, a former top-ranking town in the IBAL litter league, also performed well achieving status 'cleaner than European norms'.
Sonya Kavanagh, Chief Executive, Kildare County Council said: "We're very proud of the standard of the public realm spaces in Maynooth, to have it recognised as Ireland's Cleanest Town is a wonderful honour. Results like this are a great acknowledgement of the importance of volunteerism, of the cooperation between Maynooth Tidy Towns, Maynooth University, our Municipal District Team and Environment team in Kildare County Council. Our sincere congratulations to all involved."
