FP McCann Brings The Big Bridge To St Patricks Primary School

FP McCann has brought The Big Bridge workshop to St Patricks Primary School in Pennyburn.

The workshop was held as part of the Bay Road Bridge and Greenway project which involves the construction of a new 63 metre long foot and cycle bridge across the Pennyburn Inlet, along with 663 metres of new greenway which will connect to Bay Road Park.

The Big Bridge provides a hands-on experience for primary five, six and seven students as part of STEM education and key stage two learning. Before the workshop began, the pupils were given a presentation on bridges and the project.


The workshop involved constructing the deck using scaffolding and pins and then attaching the cables. Then the testing began, with the students demonstrating the full range of walking styles whilst crossing the bridge one by one, this included some of the teachers as well as the Principal, Mr Devlin.

Pupils were also informed about recycling and reuse of the components, therefore the bridge was dismantled back to its original building blocks. Throughout the sessions, pupils were guided by FP McCann and Design ID staff and had the opportunity to ask questions.
