A number of leading academic, construction and engineering organisations across Ireland have joined forces for the STEPS Engineering Your Future work experience placement programme.

Farrans Construction and Advanced Technologies in Manufacturing (ATIM) are among the companies hosting Transition Year (TY) students for the forthcoming programme.

These hands-on placements involving 21 partner organisations/academic institutions, are designed to provide Transition Year students with a meaningful and practical insight into engineering at third level and as a career. During the programme, which runs up to five consecutive days, students attend interactive talks and presentations; get hands-on experience with group-based activities; visit local industry and meet engineers at various stages in their careers.

Liebherr Container Cranes based in Kerry and Combilift in Monaghan will also host students on a STEPS Engineering Your Future 'apprenticeship' programme, which will provide students with a custom apprenticeship work experience placement where they will receive guidance from working and qualified apprentices.

Encouraging Transition Year students to apply for the STEPS Engineering Your Future programme, Damien Owens, Director General of Engineers Ireland said: "The STEPS Engineering Your Future programme has grown from a pilot with UCD in 2012 to now having 21 project partners, providing even more students with the opportunity to explore the engineering profession. With applications for placements now open, I would encourage Transition Year students who would like to play a role in transforming society to apply for a place today."
