New-Look Drummee Waste Management Facility Opens

Construction News Image
The integrated waste management facility at Drummee in Enniskillen has officially reopened following a major refurbishment and upgrade programme.

The new-look site provides a more efficient service to the public, providing easy access to skips for recycling, with new and improved signage for guidance to the location of the various waste streams. The larger skips and compactors provide increased capacity for material collected on the site and additional space to recycle an expanded range of materials. The 'Reuse' part of the site has also been relocated and is now open once again.

Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Errol Thompson, and DAERA Minister Edwin Poots, MLA, visited the site on Wednesday 29 September to mark the official opening.

Councillor Thompson said: "The upgrade of facilities here at Drummee, which was supported by significant funding from DAERA, is an important investment in waste infrastructure for the future. We are very grateful to the Department for making funding available to the Council to undertake this work providing state of the art facilities which, I am confident, will have a significant impact on promoting reuse, improving our recycling rate and reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.

"In recent years many of our sites across the district have undergone extensive refurbishment contributing to a much safer environment for users and improving the working conditions of staff at the sites. Indeed further upgrades to the Council's Recycling and Waste Transfer Station at Gortrush in Omagh have been undertaken as part of this investment.

"I would also like to pay tribute to the ongoing efforts of residents to separate their waste and recycle as much as possible, and we will continue to develop the waste management infrastructure to ensure that residents have access to high quality recycling facilities."

Environment Minister Edwin Poots MLA added: "I am delighted that Fermanagh and Omagh District Council secured this funding to improve the facilities at Drummee Household Recycling Centre. The former Centre was located on an old site with ageing infrastructure in need of redevelopment and equipment in need of upgrading. The changes are impressive and will no doubt assist the public to further increase their recycling in a safe and more pleasant environment."
