Eirgrid Reveals Kerry Community Projects Share In €205,000 Sponsorship Fund

EirGrid has revealed 15 community projects that succeeded in their applications to the €205,000 sponsorship fund for the Kilpaddoge-Knockanure electricity project.

The community projects are located in the towns of Moyvane, Knockanure and Tarbert in North Kerry. They range from a sports hall refurbishment to mental health awareness courses, nature walk trails and the provision of jerseys, footballs and training gear.

Seven of the projects are based in Moyvane, five are in Tarbert and three are in Knockanure.

The Kilpaddoge-Knockanure Project is a new underground electricity cable that links the substations of Knockanure and Kilpaddoge, near Tarbert.

The project is designed to connect renewable electricity generated in the south west of the country and will transport approximately 300 megawatts of energy generated by local wind farms; roughly equivalent to the amount of electricity needed to power 225,000 homes.

The project will also strengthen the transmission network in the south west of the country, ensuring a secure supply of electricity for homes and businesses.

Local community projects along the route were invited to submit applications to the €205,000 community sponsorship fund in March this year, with applications closing in July 2020.

Mark Foley, EirGrid Chief Executive, said: "We are always grateful for local support and understanding when we develop the grid, and have established our community funds as a way of recognising the communities that host Ireland's vital electricity infrastructure.

"I want to congratulate the successful applicants to the community sponsorship fund for the Kilpaddoge-Knockanure project and wish the projects all the best in providing additional benefit to their communities."
