£4m Leisure Complex Approved In Coalisland

Construction News Image
Plans for a new state-of-the-art leisure complex in Coalisland, County Tyrone, have been approved.

The proposals will see a new building constructed at the site of the Gortgonis leisure centre, housing a gym and community hall, changing facilities, meeting rooms and to accommodate a local play group and a day centre.

The redevelopment will also include an outdoor 3G soccer pitch, running track and play area, as well as a landscaped parkland and woodland pathways.

Mid Ulster District Council confirmed the approval of the £4 million facility.

Chair of the Council's Development Committee, Councillor Trevor Wilson, said: "This is a milestone in the development of the project and follows extensive consultation to ensure that these new, high quality facilities will meet local need and enhance opportunities for local people to participate in sport, recreation and physical activity.

"The Gortgonis development is among several developments taking place in the next six months when we will see the £1.8m renovations at Dungannon Leisure Centre complete, together with a £300K investment in dedicated spin studios in Cookstown and Greenvale Leisure Centres and also a refurbished fitness suite in Cookstown."

Funding of up to £1M is now being sought from the Department for Communities, given Coalisland's designation as a Neighbourhood Renewal Area and the important part the new facilities will play in improving the health and well-being of local people.

Gortgonis leisure centre is expected to close this winter to allow main build works to begin in spring 2020.
