Call For Funding To Restore Monaghan Roads Affected By Sinkholes

Funding has been requested from the Department of Transport, Tourism, and Sport to restore roads in Monaghan's Knocknacran and Drumgossat townlands which were affected by a mine collapse last year.

A disused mine collapsed at Mageracloone GAA club pitch in September 2018, causing sinkholes and resulting in a number of nearby road closures.


After meeting with residents in the South Monaghan area who have been restricted by sinkholes, Fianna Fáil's Niamh Smyth said: "An investigation into the matter is also with the Department of Communications, Climate Action, and Environment with results expected to be issued to Monaghan County Council in the coming weeks.

"Residents in our area have been inconvenienced for too long and deserve solutions.  

"I have raised this with both Ministers for Transport and Communications. While this is a complex problem under no circumstances must there be delays from the Departments which might prolong a solution being found," concluded Deputy Smyth.
