Cork City Council Urged To Rejuvenate "Run-Down" Noel Cantwell Walk

Construction News Image
Cork City Council has been urged to rejuvenate the "run-down" Noel Cantwell Walk, a tribute to the former Manchester United and Cork-born football player.

Following a visit to the walkway, the Leader of Seanad Eireann and Cork South Central Senator Jerry Buttimer said: "Noel Cantwell was one of the great Cork sports people and this walk way has served as a tribute to his achievements since it opened in 2015. To see it now in such a run down and neglected condition is a massive shame.

"The potential of this amenity is not being realised fully. To help rejuvenate the area I am proposing that City Council along with consultation with interested local groups paint the walls of the walk, that are currently covered with graffiti, with a mural of great Cork sports people from down through the years.

"I believe this would be a great way to honour Noel and for our other great sports stars of all different codes to be recognised by the City. This would also clean up the walk way for all those who use it.

"We in Cork have so many sporting heroes who have inspired us down through the years. I would be a fitting reminder of our sporting glory days, and would also generate tourism.

"I will be writing to City Council to ask them to take this suggestion under consideration."
