Ballymun Area 'Capable Of Delivering Up To 2,000 New Homes'

Up to 2,000 new homes could be delivered on State-owned land in the Ballymun area of Dublin, according to Fianna Fáil Councillor Paul McAuliffe.

Mr McAuliffe hit out at the Government's record of delivering 'affordable' homes in Ireland after 11 new houses were unveiled as part of a development in Dublin 11.

"There is enough State owned land available in the Ballymun area to provide for the development of up to 2,000 new homes but rather than fully utilised to alleviate the crisis, it lies vacant and unused," he said.

"Over 12 months have passed since the Ballymun Local Area Plan zoned and identified planning objectives for close to 30 different sites, but because of the Government's inaction none of the sites have been disposed of.

"The Oscar Traynor project to develop mixed housing remains bogged down yet Minister Damien English was willing to stand in Ballymun for the photo-op's to deliver just 11 homes.

"Despite repeated calls from my party colleagues and I, the Government have failed to adopt plans to establish the much needed Affordable Housing Scheme.

"The Minister came out here this morning to cut a ribbon and have his photo taken while the delay in introducing the scheme is blocking countless Dublin families from ever owning their own home. Delivering a handful of affordable homes among a population of over 20,000 people is nothing to laud."
