Private Rented Sector Must Be Regulated - McCann

Sinn Féin Housing Spokesperson Fra McCann has said there is a major concern that changes to mortgage applications will force more people into the unregulated rented sector.

Mr McCann said: "The tightening of procedures to secure a mortgage will undoubtedly cause more people to be turned down for a mortgage forcing them onto the housing waiting list.


"With thousands already in housing stress and the minister's inability to bring forward solutions the only option left open to many people will be the private housing sector.

"This sector is totally unregulated at the moment with landlords charging exorbitant rents for properties that are in poor condition and not suitable for families.

"Sinn Féin has for many years raised the serious problems which exist in the private rented sector.

"We believe everyone is entitled to a proper place to live at a fair rent.

"I am bringing forward a motion to the Assembly calling on the minister to immediately implement regulations for landlords so that tenants are given proper protection and rights to a proper home."
