Wall Strengthening Works Begin In Newcastle

Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has announced the start of a £340,000 maintenance scheme on A2 Central Promenade, Newcastle.

The work, at the junction of King Street, has recently commenced.

Mr Kennedy said: "This is a significant investment in the town which will strengthen and repair the sea defence retaining wall."

To help minimise any inconvenience to the travelling public and local businesses, the work is programmed to be completed using a lane closure and three-way temporary traffic lights.

Initially, the lane closure shall be required on a 24-hour basis from 7am on Monday to 11pm on Friday, for an estimated initial period of six weeks, dependent on favourable weather conditions. This is to enable the construction of the 150 metre plinth to be completed. During this period, it has been agreed that a manually operated stop/go system shall be employed targeting the tidal morning and evening flows between 7am and 9am and 3.30pm and 6pm. These times will be adapted as appropriate in order to help improve traffic flows.

The two way flow will be in place from 11pm on Thursday 17 April to 7am on Wednesday 23 April, and 6pm on Friday 2 May to 7am on Tuesday 6 May.

As the plinth and pressure grouting progresses, the length of the traffic management reduces. The replacing of rock armouring will be ongoing and will still require access traffic management to facilitate access for lorries to the site.

The scheme is expected to be completed on Friday 23 May 2014.
